I've found that writing letters works to alieve some of that absence, even if they're not able to be sent.

[ roy has a notebook that he writes all of his thoughts into, and though he won't be able to send them back to amestris, he does feel better getting them out of his head. ]

At the very least, you can have some level of connection to them, even if they're not able to be sent out.
