hey! i've been wondering something recently!

i spoke to a guy who's met aliens and fought them, and i realize that i havent had a chance to ask everybody! where do you all come from? what's your world like?

its probably kinda boring to ask at this point but i don't really know a lot of you and i bet you've all got really cool stories to tell!

also if anyones not busy, i wanna mess around with my magic some more

[ She's learning, but she doesn't know exactly how much magic she can do yet! ]

Seeing as how I was already dead back in my world and had been for three millennia, I'm well aware of that difference, thank you.

Now, now... as grateful as I am to Astoria for giving me yet another chance to pursue my unfinished business, cheating the scales of Anubis and escaping the jaws of Ammit were already a talent of mine long before she was in the picture.

[ it was only fair that dark bakura actually answer haruhi's original question if he was going to give her an obnoxious reply like that, even if a different sort of punishment awaited wicked souls like his in the egyptian afterlife than the more modern concept of "Hell". ]

But I appreciate the sentiment.

You could say that, yes.

However, even if I were to achieve that goal, I've trespassed on the territory of the gods too often for them to simply let me pass on into the next world while in pursuit of that goal. As a result, the only thing that's waiting for me at the end of the line is an eternity of nothingness.

In a way, I almost owe Astoria a favor, even though I've known from the very beginning what the consequences of my actions would be.

[ still, in his mind, his goal is worth the consequences, however severe they might be. ]

What else would keep a spirit earthbound but a strongly held grudge?

[ it's more than what haruhi was probably expecting to get, but it's also clear that that's where dark bakura is going to draw the line, the answer short and to the point, as though it were simply a fact of life for all ghosts with unfinished business. ]

The grudges of earthbound spirits are most often directed towards a particular person or even a particular place that, in the opinion of the spirit, wronged them in one way or another during their lifetime... however, without either of those things in the picture, those grudges essentially become pointless.

[ which, in a way, is almost more dangerous than a grudge with a goal, because now the grudge has nowhere to go but outward even if the things that will be impacted have nothing to do with, well, anything. ]

In other words, it will be of no threat to you, or to most of the people here, because the source of that grudge was largely left behind when I was brought to this world...

[ keyword: most. he's purposefully neglecting to mention that the man he hates most of all is, in fact, in the Circle with them, since he's clearly going to get some kind of Lecture if he does and he's having absolutely none of that. ]

I said I was a spirit, not a demon... and spirits of any kind, including those of ordinary human beings, can trespass on the territory of the gods just as much as any demon's can if that spirit is willing to try hard enough.

[ which is only... half of the truth but she's already gotten close enough to the truth on her own without him giving it away and ruining the fun of the game. ]

[ well, congratulations, haruhi, you just have -- even though he's technically "alive" in this world, but shh. ]

But I've already told you how common it was, haven't I? The vast majority of spirits that are earthbound are earthbound because they have a strongly held grudge... very few things on this plane of existence are worth not passing on into the spirit world for.

However, some of them certainly can still have an attachment to something in the world they've left behind other than a grudge, such as a place, a thing, or even a person, yes.
