Since we’re all feeling a little under the weather this month, I thought of a way we could still have fun while we’re rotting away in our beds from boredom: a choose-your-own-adventure game.

I understand that this might be a new concept for some of you, so I’ll explain how the game works before we get started. I’ll give you a single prompt to start with. Your job is to reply to my prompt and wait for more information from me. I’ll then give you another prompt based on what actions you took in your response… in other words, it’s a bit like collaborative storytelling. However, only one writer can establish the setting, and that’s me.

Now… let’s begin.

Weary traveler! The spooky, demon castle that you had set out for when you started your journey to slay its lord months ago is upon you. It rests atop high cliffs, its darkened towers and turrets looming over the forest surrounding it. It appears to be guarded only by a drawbridge. But be careful! It hovers above treacherous waters. Try not to fall in.

How do you wish to proceed?

I'm not sure I like going into places with the word 'Forbidden' in their names. That usually means ... you aren't supposed to enter.

But there's no other way inside, is there?

It could also simply be a name. That's what all spooky, demon forests are called in roleplaying games, aren't they?

And there are other ways inside the spooky, demon castle, but they all brush up against the outskirts of the forest, where monsters and other unsavory creatures could ambush you as you attempt to sneak in through a different entrance.

So what will it be, adventurer? Will you brave the drawbridge? Or will you go through with your original plan?

[ He doesn't know what a roleplaying game is, but if this is it, it's fun? Like an interactive story. ]

.... Really don't wanna deal with any monsters. So, possibly haunted Forbidden Forest it is. Is it just a name after all?

Our bold adventurer enters the Forbidden Forest in search of another, less direct entrance to the castle. Unfortunately, this route is no better than the drawbridge. The instant you set foot into the forest, a pair of red eyes glows in the darkness. But before you can flee, the large, black dog they belong to emerges, its mere presence killing you in one fell swoop, for the grim was and always will be an omen of death.

I died? Just like that?! You didn't even give me a chance to fight it!

[hauhra]

How can you? It's an omen of death. The moment you see it, or hear it, you die. That's kind of how death omens work.

[ he doesn't make the rules. ]

But how was I supposed to know that omen was going to be there when I went in? C'mon ...

[hauhra]

Omens may be a warning in and of themselves, but they don't necessarily have to come with a warning themselves.

Besides, they're part of the risk you take when you choose to enter the Forbidden Forest. Too bad for you.

[lavabend]

Fine. You're the Game Master. Pretty much the ruling deity here.

Can I try again?

[hauhra]

That may be true, but upholding the wishes of the players is just an important part of that role. It's what keeps them interested in your campaign... otherwise their interest will dry up along with your game.

But yes, you're more than welcome to try again from square one, in front of the drawbridge where you started. How would you like to proceed this time, my determined adventurer?
