Since we’re all feeling a little under the weather this month, I thought of a way we could still have fun while we’re rotting away in our beds from boredom: a choose-your-own-adventure game.

I understand that this might be a new concept for some of you, so I’ll explain how the game works before we get started. I’ll give you a single prompt to start with. Your job is to reply to my prompt and wait for more information from me. I’ll then give you another prompt based on what actions you took in your response… in other words, it’s a bit like collaborative storytelling. However, only one writer can establish the setting, and that’s me.

Now… let’s begin.

Weary traveler! The spooky, demon castle that you had set out for when you started your journey to slay its lord months ago is upon you. It rests atop high cliffs, its darkened towers and turrets looming over the forest surrounding it. It appears to be guarded only by a drawbridge. But be careful! It hovers above treacherous waters. Try not to fall in.

How do you wish to proceed?

Except it's obviously not a waste of time to me or else I wouldn't have posted it, and other people wouldn't have responded... games have always been a hobby of mine, and they're certainly more productive than complaining about how I might actually be dying.

Everyone is complaining that you keep killing them off, how is this not a waste of their time?

And that's stupid. None of us are dying. [ except they kind of are but he's refusing the consider the possibility. ]

That certainly isn't going to stop some people from comparing it to death.

[ he's kind of one of them but in his defense he's also had firsthand experience with death and knows what he's talking about BUT ANYWAY - ]

And in case you haven't noticed, only a select number of people are complaining... the rest are just picking up the pieces and trying again just as with any other extraordinarily difficult game.

Those people are just being dramatic.

I don't see how it's a game when you're killing people off for eating sandwiches or napping.

Those players clearly have no interest in the world I've created for them... by wasting my time with replies that do absolutely nothing to progress the key plot points, they've given me every right to kill their characters off.

Maybe you're just not good at running your so-called game.

Allowing room for creativity is an important part of being a good Dungeon Master. However, that creativity also needs to be kept within reason. Otherwise, your campaign is going to fall into complete and utter chaos, with no end in sight... it's not my fault that some players appear to understand this concept less than others.

If you players quit on you then you probably won't have a campaign either.

If they're the kind of players who need to be told what sorts of actions are and aren't relevant to the campaign, then they're probably just looking for a quick thrill at the expense of my time and have absolutely no intention of sticking around for the long term anyway... and to tell you the truth, players like that are of no real loss to me.

Because I'm hosting this game for my own entertainment as much as for others. Or did you really think that I was playing the role of Dungeon Master out of the goodness of my own heart?

Is it wrong to be passionate about your hobbies?

[ what do you mean there's a difference between being passionate and being overinvested. ]

Maybe.... that passionate.

I'm still not seeing what exactly the problem is.

Then what we really have here is a personal problem, don't we?

[ Not that Dark Bakura looks or sounds offended in the slightest -- in fact, he's speaking almost as though that's simply another fact of life that he's come to accept rather than put in the effort to be a more likable human being, one that he almost seems to revel in. ]

I just don't think you're going to find people who are as... into this game as you are.

I don't see why not when I've seen stranger things in this world already... honestly, at this rate, all I have to do is bide my time until that person comes along... hell, for all I know, I've probably already met them -- especially since I came from my world with company... company that is very much like-minded in many ways, however unwilling they are to admit to that fact...

[ Dark Bakura is chuckling to himself, as he does, his laughter low and dark, clearly not bothered by the fact that he's the only one who seems to think that this is funny. ]

So.... play with them? You're not making much sense.

[ honestly, though, zuko would probably be team bakura if he realized that he was talking about captain puzzles :/ :/ ]

And what if I'd like to play with someone less predictable than the same people I've already played games with dozens of times before?

[ he's going to conveniently omit the part where he doesn't like playing against yugi and pals because he always loses and also because they're onto his bullshit, but shhh. ]

Seems to me like you don't have a lot of options of people you can play with. Because you're picky.

At the same time, however, I very well can't expect to catch the few options I do have if I'm not casting a net at all, now, can I?
